Strange Currencies is the first exhibition to articulate a history for the unorthodox, artist-run spaces that emerged in Mexico City in the 1990s. Fleeting, flickering, and at times confrontational, these venues played a pivotal role in shaping the city's now vibrant contemporary art landscape. Moore's curator is working closely with the spaces' founders, as well as artist-run spaces in Philadelphia, to better understand not only this particular period of Mexico's cultural history, but also the larger questions of how artistic ecosystems are built from the ground-up. The exhibition, taccompanied by outside performances and a film program, includes artworks that have never before been shown outside of Mexico.
Additional unrestricted funds are added to each grant for general operating support.
