Raw Material: The Art and Life of Susan Kleckner

A retrospective exhibition of the work of Susan Kleckner (1941–2010) at Haverford College’s Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery is the first major survey of the artist’s photography, film, video, performance, and visual art pieces. Comprising more than 100 artworks, film screenings in collaboration with Lightbox Film Center, a scholarly monograph, and a restaging of one of Kleckner’s performance pieces, the project highlights issues central to the artist’s practice, including social and political activism, feminism, and queer rights. Best known as a photographer and filmmaker, Kleckner co-directed the first feature film made solely by women (Three Lives, 1971) and helped organize Women Artists in Revolution and the Women’s Interart Center. The exhibition includes a previously unexhibited body of work the artist created toward the end of her life while undergoing psychoanalysis and grappling with childhood trauma and a sudden illness.

The total grant amount represents project funding plus an additional 20% in unrestricted general operating support.
