The Arden Theatre Company produced the American regional theater premiere of John Caird's Candide, originally commissioned by London's Royal National Theatre. Playwright John Caird's adaptation of this classic satire, written by 18th-century philosopher Voltaire, transformed the work into a part-musical, part-operetta that merged philosophical ideas with lowbrow humor. The production included new lyrics for Leonard Bernstein's original score written by Stephen Sondheim and Richard Wilbur, and featured 20 actors, 11 musicians, and staging in-the-round.
