Curator and co-director of Icebox Project Space, Timothy Belknap will present Killjoy’s Kastle, an interactive performance installation created by the collaborative artistic team of Allyson Mitchell and Deirdre Logue. With an incisive sense of humor, the large-scale work finds its roots in lesbian-feminist critique and draws on elements of traditional carnival haunted houses, as audiences move through multiple rooms in an immersive experience that plays with themes of identity, race, gender, and class. The rooms will be comprised of sculptural objects constructed and activated by Philadelphia artists who will be selected to participate, allowing Mitchell and Logue to create a new version of the work that responds to its location and local communities. At the end of each tour of Killjoy’s Kastle, audiences will be invited into a space for contemplation and facilitated conversations.

Additional unrestricted funds are added to each grant for general operating support.

Timothy Belknap

Timothy Belknap is a Philadelphia artist and curator and co-director of Icebox Project Space at Crane Arts. Belknap received a BA from the University of Illinois at Chicago and an MFA in sculpture from Tyler School of Art. He has curated and collaborated with over 100 artists, and his own work has recently been exhibited in both Philadelphia and New York City, garnering coverage in ArtNews, Title Magazine, The Philadelphia Inquirer and WHYY, among others. In 2018, Belknap received a Center Project grant to present Killjoy’s Kastle, a large-scale, interactive performance in the form of a haunted house created by the collaborative artistic team of Allyson Mitchell and Deirdre Logue.
