Tempesta di Mare – Philadelphia Baroque Orchestra performs baroque music on baroque instruments with a repertoire that ranges from staged opera to chamber music. The group performs all orchestral repertoire without a conductor, as was the practice when this music was new. Led by directors Gwyn Roberts and Richard Stone with concertmaster Emlyn Ngai, the ensemble is the only American baroque music group to record for the prestigious British label Chandos. Over the course of its 2013–14 and 2014–15 seasons, the ensemble presented Tragédie et Comédie, a Center-funded concert series of French baroque orchestral music played on period-specific instruments. In 2016, Tempesta received a Center grant to present Telemann 360º, a two-part concert program combined with a live talk show hosted by Live from Lincoln Center's Fred Child, and an accompanying studio recording that will offer a fresh perspective on the artistic legacy of baroque composer Georg Philipp Telemann.
The Philadelphia Baroque Orchestra Tempesta di Mare presented the concert series From Wealth of Tears to Cheerful Hearts: Odes by Bach and Blow in collaboration with the Philadelphia Singers. The program featured J.S. Bach's rarely performed Trauer-Ode, along with the world premiere of composer John Blow's With Cheerful Hearts, an ode to New Year's Day transcribed from the sole surviving manuscript at the British Museum.
