The historical painting Penn’s Treaty with the Indians serves as a conceptual anchor for a new theater piece centering contemporary Indigenous presence, creativity, and joy while confronting historical erasure and ongoing threats to sovereignty. Developed by a team of Indigenous artists and collaborators, the production challenges dominant narratives of peaceful colonization through original music, dance, live painting, archival material, and digital media. 

The total grant amount represents project funding plus an additional 20% in unrestricted general operating support.

We Are the Seeds, fiscally sponsored by CultureTrust Greater Philadelphia, produces cultural programs and workshops that celebrate and support Indigenous arts, artists, and Native communities throughout North America. It has partnered on projects with the Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Montclair Art Museum, MoMA NYC, Penn Museum, Free Library of Philadelphia, and educational institutions. As a Native-led organization, We Are the Seeds’ mission is to serve the Indigenous community in the Northeast and design programming that reconciles gaps in representation of East Coast Indigenous artists and makers.
