The Community Education Center was founded by local community members to promote shared experiences among diverse audiences. Over time, performing arts became the unifying thread and the Community Education Center has grown into an arts organization with a focus on cultivating a support system for artists, supported through residency and service programs.
The Community Education Center (CEC) invited three Philadelphia dance artists, Megan Mazarick, Shavon Norris, and former Pennsylvania Ballet soloist Meredith Rainey, to participate in the organization's New Edge Residency program. Part of the CEC's New Edge Artists Service Program, the New Edge Residency was established in 1984 to support the development of new work by Philadelphia artists who have had substantial performance experience, yet are still emerging. The choreographers were each given a stipend and 10 months of rehearsal space to produce a new work presented in three evening-length performances. For the 2008 showcase, Mazarick created a surreal adventure into video game culture with her work Avatard; Norris used personal narrative in her dance piece We Said; and Rainey choreographed Look Inside, a duet with video by Pew Fellow Jorge Cousineau (2011).
