The Village of Arts and Humanities (the Village) supports the voices and aspirations of its North Philadelphia community by providing opportunities for artistic expression and personal success that engage youth and their families, revitalize physical space, and preserve black heritage. Founded in 1986, the Village is an established community asset of 15 art parks and 13 program buildings that include media labs, dance and photography studios, a sound recording booth, and a quarter-acre urban farm.
Bearing Witness, is the Village’s twentieth anniversary exhibition. Along with a series of cultural events, it will bring together, under the direction of artist/curators Joyce Scott and Homer Jackson, a team of local and national visual, literary, and digital artists to create installations and memorial sculptures that honor the North Philadelphia neighborhood icons of Fairhill-Hartranft. Under the banner “Bearing Witness,” the Village has developed a two-year programmatic theme that incorporates ways for the neighborhood to take ownership of its own storytelling and mythmaking and to share, react, and celebrate the people, places, and values that are most significant to them.
Project Dates: June 2007 – September 2007
