Kulu Mele African Dance & Drum Ensemble debuts Ogun & the People at the Annenberg Center. Led by Pew Fellow and Kulu Mele artistic director Dorothy Wilkie, the full-length narrative dance explores the story of the Yoruba deity Ogun, a warrior and protector who abandons the gods, causing violence and famine on earth. Wilkie uses elements of traditional Afro-Cuban/Yoruba culture, which originates in West Africa. The Yoruba people use dance, song, and storytelling to express contemporary relevance around themes of community and personal spiritual practice.
