Leah Stein Dance Company created Urban Echo, the company's second collaboration with the Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia, directed by Alan Harler. The work featured an improvised vocal score developed by contemporary composer Pauline Oliveros, who worked closely with Stein and Harler during the creative process. In a unique merging, Urban Echo showed singers performing movements alongside the dancers, and dancers, in turn, creating sound with the singers. Urban Echo premiered in 2009 in the sanctuary at the Rotunda in West Philadelphia. This work led to a Center-funded collaboration between Stein and Oliveros in 2013.
