Located in Philadelphia’s Chinatown North neighborhood, Asian Arts Initiative (AAI) uses art as a vehicle to explore the experiences of Asian Americans and the diverse communities of which they are a part. A multidisciplinary art center and community gathering space, AAI offers exhibitions, performances, artist residencies, and youth workshops that connect cultural expression and social change.
Asian Arts Initiative (AAI) will underscore the intersections of art, sport, and queer identity through an exhibition and public programs that showcase the multidisciplinary work of print artist and professional skateboarder Jeffrey Cheung. Cheung’s Unity Press & Skateboarding initiative, which he organizes with collaborator Gabriel Ramirez, has facilitated programs that center the voices of queer and trans identifying youth of color in the Oakland area of California. With AAI, Cheung will connect with Philadelphia’s skate scene and queer artists of color through programs including pop-up performances and workshops in AAI’s galleries and theater, as well as in neighborhood parks and skate venues. By creating an artistic environment in which youth can come together, Unity at the Initiative will explore the tenets of collaboration inherent in printmaking, skateboarding, and community organizing.
Additional unrestricted funds are added to each grant for general operating support.
