Arte pa’l Barrio

A discovery process will support a collaboration between Moore College of Art & Design and the Norris Square Community Alliance to develop new forms of art-based civic engagement in a historic Puerto Rican neighborhood in North Philadelphia. Guided by Moore professor and artist Nasheli Ortiz, the project will invite residents to participate in discussions and art-making programs facilitated by Latinx visual artist, educator, and resident of Norris Square Betsy Casañas, along with Rosenda Álvarez Faro and Zuania Minier, members of women’s artist collective Taller Malaquita based in Puerto Rico. Programs will focus on historical and contemporary Puerto Rican craft models and skill sharing around painting, pottery, and sewing. Through the collaboration, Moore aims to expand its approaches to contemporary curriculum and urban-based art and design education while building community and preserving cultural heritage.

The total grant amount represents project funding plus an additional 20% in unrestricted general operating support.
