For over 25 years, Network for New Music has been dedicated to commissioning and performing music by living composers. Winner of the 2001 ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, the Network for New Music ensemble draws two-thirds of its members from the Philadelphia Orchestra, as well as from the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, faculty members of leading universities, and guest artists from the region. With Center support, Network for New Music will bring renowned composer John Harbison to Philadelphia in April 2014 for a weeklong mini-festival of two concerts and related events that celebrate his career of classical- and jazz-inspired chamber music.
Network for New Music commissioned four new chamber works by composers Andrea Clearfield, Shih Hui Chen, Dai Fujikura, and Eric Moe for Trade Winds: New Music Explores Asia. The Network for New Music Ensemble premiered their works under Jan Krzywicki at three concerts, responding to contemporary and traditional music from Tibet, China, and Japan. The composers spoke to composition students and held pre-concert discussions at Settlement Music School and Temple University.
