Founded in 1974, People's Light is one of Pennsylvania's largest professional nonprofit theaters and is known for its resident company of artists, eclectic mix of productions, and innovative work with young people. The company produces a mix of world premieres, contemporary plays, and fresh approaches to classic texts. Its initiatives include the New Play Frontiers Residency and Commission program to support the development of new work.
People's Light & Theatre Company of Chester County crosses traditional boundaries of theater by combining artistry with education. The company used a project grant to undertake a long-range plan to align future programming with its mission of integrating art and education. The staff was restructured to create new pathways for projects, including the creation of a new administrative coordinator position to help facilitate this transition. People's Light partnered with New York's Epic Theatre Ensemble and the National Theatre of Scotland for two summer institutes, in which the like-minded organizations shared ideas for new arts and education projects and explored new methods of work, to be recorded and shared with others on the People's Light website. The resulting exploration led to new models of production, which greatly informed the company's 2013 Center-funded production of A Winter's Tale.
