The Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance's (GCPA) Grassroots Engagement Initiative was designed to expand the organization's ability to build support for the arts in Philadelphia's communities, and to mobilize members of those communities to become arts advocates. At the same time, it would empower GPCA member organizations to build their own relationships with local communities and to expand their audience bases. In doing so, GPCA went beyond its "think-tank" model and developed a more hands-on, grassroots approach in connecting with the public and making the arts more accessible. The project encouraged public participation in the region's arts and culture, emphasizing community growth and the audience experience. 1
