Founded in 1994 by choreographer Kun-Yang Lin, Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers (KYL/D) is one of the country’s foremost contemporary Asian American dance companies. Described as "deeply spiritual and remarkable" by Dance Magazine, the company celebrates the ability of dance to integrate body, mind, and spirit. KYL/D has performed internationally in countries including Indonesia, Korea, Mexico, Singapore, and Taiwan, and in the US at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, Lincoln Center Out of Doors, and the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts, among others. The company has received numerous awards, including a USArtists International grant from the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation and support from the US Department of State for its 2011 tour to Indonesia. Past Center grants have supported intensive company training with visiting artists, and in 2017, KYL/D received a Center grant to create Faith Project, new dance work contemplating the relationship between religious practice and contemporary dance. In 2020, KYL/D received a Center Discovery grant for WHERE IS MY B-O-D-Y, in which accomplished dance artists Gus Solomons jr and Pallabi Chakravorty will collaborate with Lin to develop new movement methods for artists who are navigating lives as mature creators with physical limitations.
