The Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia (JASGP) is a nonprofit dedicated to inspiring mutual curiosity, understanding, and collaboration between Japan and Philadelphia. It operates the historic Shofuso Japanese House and Garden located in Philadelphia’s West Fairmount Park, produces the annual Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival, and provides Japanese arts, business, and cultural educational programming for all ages. In 2019, JASGP received a Center Project grant to produce Shofuso and Modernism, an exhibition spotlighting the transcultural collaborations among Japanese American furniture designer George Nakashima, the Japanese architect of Shofuso Junzo Yoshimura, and European American architects and designers Antonin and Noémi Raymond. In 2021, JASGP received a Re:imagining Recovery grant to evaluate and reaffirm its commitment to “mutual curiosity, understanding, and collaboration” through a restructuring of its approach to its cultural festivals, such as the popular annual Cherry Blossom Festival.
