The PRISM Quartet and The University of the Arts present a series of three back-to-back master classes and panel discussions.
In this first installment, saxophonists/composers Dave Liebman and Greg Osby will work in pairs with student jazz ensembles. This master class will be followed by a panel discussion, moderated by John Schaefer (host of WNYC's New Sounds and Sound Check), addressing the unique challenges of collaborating across genres to create work that blends divergent performance and compositional practices. The panel will explore commonalities and differences among their ways of improvising and creating music, and discuss the artistic, cultural, and social implications of the ongoing cross-pollination of jazz with a vast range of other music, including classical and folk music.
9:30–11 a.m.: Master class with Dave Liebman and Greg Osby
11:10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.: Panel discussion with Liebman, Osby, and PRISM Quartet members
Both the master class and the panel are free and open to the public.
The Caplan Center for the Performing Arts is located at The University of the Arts' Terra Hall, at 211 South Broad Street in Philadelphia.
