Unity at the Initiative Public Exhibitions
Asian Arts Initiative presents Unity at the Initiative, a multimedia visual exhibition, and in-home experience. Four Philadelphia locations will display a range of artworks from paintings and wheatpastings to short films and performance videos visible from the outside. A major part of the exhibition will be an indoor-outdoor immersive installation with new media performances presented in the 1219 Vine Street storefront of Asian Arts Initiative. The project is anchored in the work of Oakland-based artist and skater Jeffrey Cheung and his Unity initiative, which celebrates queer and trans BIPOC creativity and community.
As part of the in-home experience, Philadelphians who identify as queer and/or trans may enter to receive a care package consisting of art and self-care contributions designed and curated by local publication project Fortune.
The exhibition is co-curated by Alex Shen and Dongyi Wu. Participating artists include Cheung, Pew Fellow Camae Ayewa, Golden Collier, Shanel Edwards, Jeremiah Jordan, Khari Johnson-Ricks, Malachi Lily, Icon Ebony-Fierce, Soleil Summer, and Wit Lopez.
