Founded in 2001, ArtistShare is part record company, part social networking site, and part new media marketing business. While primarily a platform for musicians to develop and distribute recording projects, ArtistShare also includes filmmakers, authors, and artists working in other disciplines. ArtistShare enables artists to fund projects directly through their fan bases, and, in turn, provides fans with access to artists and their creative processes. In 2003, ArtistShare affiliated composer and bandleader Maria Schneider became the first artist to win a Grammy Award with a non-retail recording. Since then, artists associated with ArtistShare have won four Grammy Awards and garnered 11 Grammy nominations.
