Dancer, choreographer, and 2013 Pew Fellow Raphael Xavier deconstructs the art forms of break dance and spoken word. Street dance choreography is set to a conversational monologue that blends spoken word, poetry, and rap lyrics written over the course of 20 years. Xavier takes hip-hop techniques from the street to the stage and tells the autobiographical story of an artistic journey defined by sacrifice, passion, and transcendence.
The Unofficial Guide to Audience Watching Performance received a discovery grant from The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage and is being presented by First Person Arts.
The Painted Bride Art Center is located at 230 Vine Street, Philadelphia. Performances begin at 8 p.m. both nights.
