Pasión y Arte's Philadelphia Flamenco Festival will host a screening of Bodas de Sangre (Blood Wedding) (1981), the first film of Carlos Saura's "flamenco trilogy," made in collaboration with choreographer Antonio Gades. Based on the play by Federico García Lorca, this exquisite work features a flamenco ballet within a film, a documentary-style narration by Gades, and performances by legendary figures such as Cristina Hoyos, Paco de Lucía, and José Mercé. Michelle Heffner Hayes will conduct a 30-minute informal lecture prior to the screening, during which she will call attention to the subtle but radical choreographic and filmic interventions by Saura and Gades in different scenes to produce a tender embrace of flamenco's traditions.
