At The Barnes Foundation’s First Friday, Pew Fellow and pioneering jazz saxophonist Odean Pope and his sextet preview selections from his Center-supported Sounds of the Circle, a musical suite honoring North Philadelphia’s musical jazz innovators of the mid-20th century: renowned artists such as John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Benny Golson, and Pope himself. Pope’s new, original compositions show how this inspired circle resonates and continues to spark innovation.
The full composition will debut on October 12, 2019 from 7–9:30 pm at LaRose Jazz Club in Philadelphia. The new composition will be performed by an ensemble of notable Philadelphia musicians, including Pope on tenor saxophone, with Gloria Galante (harp), Craig McIver (drums), Diane Monroe (violin), Lewis Porter (piano), Lee Smith (bass), and Bobby Zankel (alto saxophone).
