New Paradise Laboratories’ O Monsters, the companion piece to their Center-supported project Hello Blackout!, travels to the 2018 Capital Fringe Festival in Washington D.C. While Hello Blackout! occurs in the distant past, O Monsters follows the Kissimmee family through an alternate present. Conceived by the company's artistic director Whit MacLaughlin and composer Bhob Rainey, both Pew Fellows, the work is "part horror story and part philosophical investigation into what is knowable and what is beyond our ability even to contemplate," according to New Paradise Laboratories. Hello Blackout! was grounded in a philosophical and artistic investigation of contingency which NPL conducted through a 2015 Center Discovery grant.
