Ars Nova Workshop presents a new commission created and performed by Nels Cline, lead guitarist for the band Wilco. An expansion of Cline’s 2016 recording Lovers (Blue Note Records), the new commission is inspired by research trips that led Cline on an inspiring journey through significant Philadelphia moments, artifacts, and sites—from Jimmy Smith’s organ and Paul Motian’s childhood home, to the memories housed in the Sigma Sound archives, the Free Library’s music holdings, and the Curtis Institute archives. What has emerged is an autobiographical “second book” of Lovers material, performed one night only, and featuring interpretations of material composed and/or performed by McCoy Tyner, Benny Golson, Paul Motian, Eddie Lang, Sol Kaplan, Ethel Waters, The Delfonics, Brenda & The Tabulations, among others.
Cline will be joined on stage by a 17-piece ensemble, including conductor-trumpeter Michael Leonhart, drummer Alex Cline, and keyboardist Yuka C. Honda, best known for her work in Cibo Matto.
General admission seating, standing room, and reserved seating are available. Tickets are $15 (standing), $25 (seated), $125 (VIP). Click here to purchase tickets.
