Crippled Symmetry *(1983): Either/OR: Richard Carrick, piano and celeste; David Shively, percussion; Jane Rigler, flutes. Saturday brings a pair of concerts at the Fleisher Art Memorial, a deconsecrated church now serving as a community art school and performance space. (Feldman served as the dean of the New York Studio School from 1969-73.) At 8 pm, the gifted New York-based ensemble Either/Or picks up the theme with *Crippled Symmetry (1983, 90 minutes), one of a late series of pieces Feldman wrote for flute, percussion, and piano. Despite its title, Crippled Symmetry is suffused with a spring-like sense of subdued yet palpable anticipation. Either/Or is a cutting-edge contemporary music ensemble based in New York City. Founded in 2004 by pianist/composer Richard Carrick and percussionist David Shively, Either/Or focuses on compelling new and recent works for unconventional ensemble formations rarely heard elsewhere. The group draws upon its roster, featuring some of New York's leading interpreters, to present intense chamber music alongside larger ensemble works.
