Monument Lab Summer Sampler
1pm - 4pm
Mural Arts Philadelphia presents a preview event for its forthcoming public art project Monument Lab: A Citywide Public Art and History Exhibition. Pew Fellow and visual artist Kara Crombie will debut her plans for her “monument” Sample Philly, an interactive sculpture with a sound bank of musical loops drawn from Philadelphia’s rich musical history. The event will also feature live music by DJ Royale, Girls Rock Philly, Rock to the Future, and others.
Monument Lab is a series of temporary public artworks guided by the question: "What is an appropriate monument for the current city of Philadelphia?" The artworks, created by 21 contemporary artists including Zoe Strauss, Hank Willis Thomas, and Alexander Rosenberg, explore notions of monumentality within the civic sphere. On-site "laboratories" designed to solicit the public's visions for appropriate monuments will accompany the artists' installations. The community’s contributions will be displayed on screens in the laboratories, as well as in a central gallery space at The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts for the duration of the project.
