Graves’ multi-faceted career has traversed music, activism, medicine, botany, and martial arts. An installation at the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) at the University of Pennsylvania examines the artist’s practice far beyond his best-known work as a drummer and includes Graves’ hand-painted album covers and posters, idiosyncratic drum sets, multimedia sculptures, photographs, and costumes, along with elements from his home, scientific studies, recording ephemera, and archival recordings, as well as space for performance.
In addition to the in-person exhibition, A Mind-Body Deal will include a virtual tour available online. An opening reception on September 25 and bi-weekly screenings of footage from Graves’s archives will also be available online.
The ICA is temporarily closed to the public due to COVID-19 safety precautions. Check the museum’s website for reopening information.
