Master Class Two with Pastora Galván
10 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Pasión y Arte offers this free master class with flamenco master Pastora Galván as part of its 2014 Philadelphia Flamenco Festival. All levels are welcome and encouraged to join.
Pastora Galván is the daughter of bailaores José Galván and Eugenia de los Reyes, and sister of bailaor Israel Galván. In her dance career, Galván has developed an artistry that combines the styles of the classical dances with the modernism that her brother Israel embodies in his dance. She is an internationally renowned artist who has been celebrated for her extraordinary skill as a traditional flamenco dancer. She was recently awarded the "Matilde Coral" prize from the XVI National Art Contest of Córdoba. In Pastora, which will be presented on two separate nights, Galván disobeys flamenco archetypes of female beauty by embracing ugliness, vulgarity and absurdity. As she digs into the more physically strenuous aspects of flamenco, vigorously stamping out the zapateado (foot percussion) and exaggerating female characterizations with irony and relish, Galván uses the character work to evocatively manipulate the frame of dramatic narrative.
