Master Class with Israel Galván at Drexel
5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Pasión y Arte offers this free master class with flamenco master Israel Galván, star of the festival performance La Curva, as part of its 2014 Philadelphia Flamenco Festival. All levels are welcome and encouraged to join.
Israel Galván de los Reyes was awarded the 2005 National Dance Prize by the Culture Department of Spanish Government for his ability to generate innovation in a traditional art form such as flamenco without undermining its cultural roots, and to create flamenco that is universal to gender. In 1994, he joined Compañía Andaluza de Danza, directed by Mario Maya, marking the start of an unstoppable career that would earn him the most prestigious prizes in flamenco and dance. Galván's work represents a new vision for flamenco: artistry that respects flamenco's traditions, while simultaneously embracing elements of other dance forms. Humor, narrative, and theatricality are additions to Galván's work, which purposefully expand the traditional form of flamenco as a means to converse with new audiences.
