How Sweet the Sound is an evening of music that joins composer John Harbison's love of jazz with beloved classical and folk traditions. Harbison's setting of classic old American folk tunes, Songs America Loves to Sing, becomes the springboard for new instrumental songs by Philadelphia composers Uri Caine (2003 Pew Fellow), James Primosch (1996 Pew Fellow); Terell Stafford, Anna Weesner (2003 Pew Fellow), and Bobby Zankel (1996 Pew Fellow), who layer jazz and classical traditions to create works that tell America's story with today's voices.

The performance will end with a jazz improv session featuring Harbison, guest artist Terell Stafford, and jazz musicians from Temple University.
