During this interactive session with Michelle Heffner Hayes, Ph.D., educational curator of Pasión y Arte's 2014 Philadelphia Flamenco Festival, participants will learn how to view and listen to a traditional flamenco concert. Following a brief overview of flamenco history, Hayes will discuss the roles of the singer, guitarist, dancer, and palmero, and how they engage one another. Audience members will learn the musical structures of some basic palos (song forms) and accent patterns, as well as how flamencos both embody and challenge traditional conventions in performance. Participants will "play" different palmas (hand clapping) rhythms and view video clips of some of flamenco's great artists.
