Experimental Grounds/Unexpected Sources
Presented in conjunction with the exhibition Strange Currencies, "Experimental Grounds/Unexpected Sources" is a film series that excavates the expanded media landscape that shaped urban cinema culture in 1990s Mexico. Marked by the youthful energy of directors and actors, a distinctive sense of irreverence and contestation, and a defiant, DIY attitude in the face of precariousness, the films embody the distinctive thrills and challenges of making moving images in Mexico City during a turbulent decade.
"Experimental Grounds/Unexpected Sources" was curated by Walter Forsberg, Paulina Suárez, and Eduardo Thomas, and is presented by International House Philadelphia in partnership with The Galleries at Moore. Funded by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage, Strange Currencies is the first exhibition to articulate a history for the unorthodox, artist-run spaces that emerged in Mexico City in the 1990s. The exhibition, accompanied by outside performances and a film program, includes artworks that have never before been shown outside of Mexico.
