The culmination of a residency with international artist collective Slavs & Tatars, The Contest of the Fruits exhibition explores Uyghur language, politics, religion, humor, and resilience through the lens of the titular 19th-century Uyghur allegorical poem.

The exhibition is presented by Hurford Center for the Arts and Humanities, in collaboration with Twelve Gates Arts and the Philadelphia chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, and features the premiere of Slavs & Tatars’ first animated film, which reinterprets The Contest of the Fruits as a Turkic rap battle. The film is accompanied by new sculptural works inspired by Uyghur culture.

An opening reception will be held Friday, September 10, 2021, from 5 to 8 p.m.
