The Contest in Context: Red-Black Thread Lecture-Performance with Slavs & Tatars and Zain Abdullah
4:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
As part of the public programming for Hurford Center for the Arts and Humanities’ The Contest of the Fruits, international artist collective Slavs & Tatars and Zain Abdullah, associate professor of Religion & Society and Islamic Studies at Temple University, present the lecture-performance Red-Black Thread.
The presentation explores the construction of Black identity through the lens of Russian idioms, stemming from imperial Russia and the Soviet Union, inviting an examination of shared Russian/Soviet and African American perspectives around failed promises of civil co-existence.
The Contest of the Fruits is a multidisciplinary and cross-cultural exhibition and public programming series taking inspiration from a 19th-century allegorical poem written in Uyghur.
