Hurford Center for the Arts and Humanities, in collaboration with Twelve Gates Arts and the Philadelphia chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, presents The Contest in Context: Noodlin’ Around, a virtual event celebrating laghman, a traditional Uyghur noodle dish.

Uyghur home chef and YouTube creator Aliya (a.k.a. Dolan Chick) and human rights advocate, scholar, and home chef Dr. Elise Anderson teach how to hand-pull the traditional long, chewy noodles of laghman. A Q&A about the dish’s social and cultural context follows the demonstration.

This event is part of Hurford’s programming offering background and insights into The Contest of the Fruits, a multidisciplinary and cross-cultural project with Berlin-based artist collective Slavs and Tatars, taking inspiration from a 19th-century Muslim text written in Uyghur.

The event is free, and advance registration is required.
