The Contest in Context: From Chaghatay to Rhythm and Rhyme
4:30 p.m.
Hurford Center for the Arts and Humanities, in collaboration with Twelve Gates Arts and the Philadelphia chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, presents The Contest in Context: From Chaghatay to Rhythm and Rhyme, a virtual roundtable discussion on Uyghur language preservation.
Social historian Eric Schluessel and Slavs & Tatars project liaison Pia Chakraverti-Wuerthwein moderate a conversation with rapper Nashtarr and linguistic anthropologist Gülnar Eziz.
This event is part of Hurford’s event series offering background and insights into The Contest of the Fruits, a multidisciplinary and cross-cultural exhibition and public programming with Berlin-based artist collective Slavs & Tatars, taking inspiration from a 19th-century Muslim text written in Uyghur.
The event is free, and advance registration is required.
