Stuart Carden is a Chicago-based freelance director specializing in new plays and ensemble-devised works. Most recently he has been building new folk fables performed by actor/musicians, including The Old Man and The Old Moon with PigPen Theatre Company and the world premiere adaptation of Leo Leoni's Frederick with Chicago Children's Theatre. From 2009 to 2014, Stuart was the Associate Artistic Director of Writers Theatre in Chicago, where he led the theater's Literary Development Initiative and helped facilitate projects ranging from the US premiere of Conor McPherson's Dance of Death to Laura Eason and Alan Schmuckler's world premiere musical, Days Like Today. From 2007 to 2009, he was the Associate Artistic Director at City Theatre in Pittsburgh. Carden served as a 2014 Center LOI panelist in Performance and a 2015 panelist in Performance.
